We have lost Natalie Cole, David Bowie and now Alan Rickman.

All to cancer.

I just can’t even right now. It’s so hard to wrap my head ahead these deaths, around people I didn’t know personally but who had such a huge influence on my life. Natalie Cole showed me how it was perfectly fine for you be a daddy’s girl and still assert yourself in this world. Her voice was beautiful and kind and the rendition of Unforgettable with her father blew my mind.

David Bowie showed me that it is perfectly fine and okay to be different. Ziggy Stardust was my first taste (albeit much later after it happened) of someone being neither male or female, Ziggy just was. And he was brilliant. Plus who does not know Under Pressure? Again, simply brilliant (although the story goes it was written in a cocaine fueled haze, but hey, who am I to judge the creative process?).

And now, Alan Rickman. Yes, I know his long and impressive movie history from Die Hard (the first movie I saw him in) to Love Actually to the Harry Potter series. And he was always casted perfectly. I don’t know how he did, but being a bad guy he was sexy and you wanted him to find redemption. As a good guy he was sexy and you just wanted to be with him.

Then Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone came along and you saw him in an entirely new light. He was brutal but still held that comic edge so he wasn’t completely despised. He was the teacher you wanted to hate but also wanted to learn from because he was just mesmerizing when he spoke. You could listen to Alan Rickman tell time and be mesmerized.

As the slogan goes, “Fuck Cancer” and may one day they be a cure. Until then, in her own song, let’s remember how truly unforgettable these talents were.
